Your Role

As a Community Organiser, you will be responsible for building and sustaining a base of community members, with a focus on achieving change that is both immediate and transformative. Your work will be guided by three core strands:

1. Building Collective Power & Shifting Structures

  • Conduct structured one-to-one and group meetings to identify, recruit, and develop movement organisers.

  • Working with the National Organiser to build a strong, cohesive, and active core team of volunteers and members.

Focus on building sustainable community power that outlasts any single campaign, altering the long-term balance of power in favour of the community.

2. Winning Material Improvements & Campaign Strategy

  • Work with the BLMUK team and community to identify key local issues affecting Black communities.

  • Develop and execute winnable campaign strategies that deliver concrete improvements in people’s lives, such as holding local institutions accountable or changing harmful policies.

  • Use clear, measurable objectives to track progress and demonstrate impact.

3. Facilitating Political Education & Development

  • Running the administration of Project Timbuktu, our political education programme. Also periodically reviewing and refreshing the content.

  • Support members in developing their confidence, leadership skills, and political analysis through the process of organising.

  • Organise public events on BLMUK related topics, including webinars and workshops, bringing together organisers from across different locations and communities.

Who You Are

  • Deeply aligned with our mission and have a practical understanding of transformative, grassroots organising principles.

  • A connector and relationship-builder with proven experience engaging and organising within your community (this could be a geographic community, a faith group, a tenant’s association, a student network, etc.). Formal job title is not as important as demonstrated initiative and impact.

  • A strategic thinker who can help turn community anger and hope into a clear plan of action.

  • Ability to deliver a strategic and escalating organising plan in a fast moving and politically complex environment

  • Excellent planning skills to ensure projects are designed delivered to a high standard

  • A developer of people who gets joy from seeing others step into their power and lead.

  • A self-starter, highly resilient and adaptable, able to work independently and manage your time effectively across two days per week.

  • Willingness to occasionally work unsociable hours (always repaid with TOIL)

  • Based in or deeply familiar with the context of Black communities in England, particularly in or around London.

Why Work With Us?

We are building a movement, not just a team, and we believe the best organisers come from diverse paths. There are no formal education requirements for this role. We value lived experience and practical skills, and we don’t mind where you got them from. Your potential to learn and grow in the role is just as important to us as your existing experience—so if you are passionate about our mission and can demonstrate core organising skills, even if you don’t meet every single criterion, we strongly encourage you to apply.

We recognise that two days a week is not enough time for the work at hand. Due to limited funding this is all the organisation can afford at this time. We hope to increase the days with this role as future funding grows. We acknowledge that due to the limited time available the work at hand will progress at a slower pace.
You’ll receive a competitive freelance rate and the unparalleled opportunity to contribute directly to a small, dedicated, and impactful team at the heart of the movement for Black liberation in the UK.
